Illuminate the historic alleys of Belfast

Belfast has a long history of alleyways. It is composed of a series of narrow alleys that connect many major city streets and districts. Today, these alleyways are still used as entry points for bars and restaurants and gathering places for outdoor dining. Although they have been suffering from poor lighting for many years, this does not affect people’s enthusiasm.

In 2019, the Belfast City Council began a new strategy to improve the lighting effects of urban lanes by means of site transformation, and cooperated with USI to jointly develop a vision for improving urban lighting effects. Last year, USI won the contract to produce an immersive lighting work for the local area, which not only reflects the local history and culture, but also provides a more visually enjoyable environment for tourists.

One of the locations selected for the professional lighting upgrade was the square outside WhitesTavern, one of the oldest Irish pubs in Belfast. The lighting installation is composed of 43 large suspended “ocean” spheres. Its design is influenced by the history of the site as an oyster market. The color changes with the changes in environmental sounds, creating a relaxing and imaginative space for visitors.

Before the installation of the globe light, the area was an empty space. Due to Covid restrictions, drinking and eating outside is one of the only ways for people to meet with friends and family, so the new lighting installation provides tourists with a safe and warm space to socialize.

USI adopts3D printing technologyTurn their immersive lighting installations into reality because the technology has greater flexibility in designing custom spheres and testing prototypes.
