China3D printingOn November 22, engineering design firm nTopology raised $65 million in a new Series D funding round led by New York-based investment firm Tiger Global Management. Other participants in the round included New York-based growth equity firm Oldslip Group, as well as existing investors Root Ventures, a California seed-stage deep tech company investing in tech teams; early-stage venture capital firm Canaan Partners; Crowd Value founder backer Haystack and New York-based global venture capital and private equity firm Insight Partners. The funds will support the expansion of its design platform into new applications and international markets, and push its valuation above $140 million.
After raising more than $10 million between 2016 and 2017, the company raised $20 million in 2019 thanks to a Series B round led by California firm Canaan Partners. Then, in 2020, it raised $40 million from Insight Partners to further develop its advanced engineering software, making it accessible to more engineers. Overall, nTopology has generated $135 million in revenue.

Founded in 2015 by Bradley Rothenberg and Greg Schroy, the company helps engineers create lightweight and optimized parts with built-in functional requirements, overcoming design bottlenecks in product development. Its flagship software, nTop Platform, launched in 2019, controls all modeling and is used in a wide range of applications, including aerospace, automotive, medical and consumer products.
“Early in my career, I found that most engineering software, like CAD, was a bottleneck in driving innovative designs. Our company was built specifically to solve engineers’ problems, allowing them to take full advantage of the capabilities of additive manufacturing processes. power and fill the void left by these old legacy design tools,” explained Rothenberg, who is also CEO of nTopology.

Over the past 12 months, the company has experienced tremendous growth, doubling revenue and increasing headcount by approximately 40%. The team also has an impressive partnership with 3D printing leader Stratasys and is now collaborating on the nTopology platform to improve efficiency and productivity on the factory floor.
Today, the 3D printing software specialist works with more than 300 customers, including Ford, Lockheed Martin, Honeywell, Emerson and Wilson, to provide their engineers with next-generation design tools. The company’s technology builds on the future of product development by capturing the design process and combining it with powerful computational workflows, enabling companies to reduce the cost and time spent on obsolete computer-aided design (CAD).
nTopology is committed to providing a wide range of industries with the tools needed for advanced manufacturing, and claims to understand that many companies still face supply chain disruptions and believes its solutions can help alleviate many of these challenges. In April, the company introduced nTopology 3.0, which introduced graphics processing unit (GPU) acceleration to reduce the visualization time of highly complex structures from minutes to seconds.
In partnership with 3D printer manufacturer Stratasys, nTopology is looking to further automate the design of manufacturing aids and simplify the adoption of 3D printing on the factory floor. Stratasys and nTopology’s new partnership brings together the 3D printing giant’s expertise built on the rapid modeling, field-driven design and reusable workflows of nTopology’s nTop platform engineering software. The goal is to provide the industry with combined tools to enable true design for additive manufacturing, paving the way for widespread adoption of manufacturing.

Its FDM Fixture Generator tool automates 90% of the design work required for simple fixtures and fixtures. Meanwhile, their most recent collaboration, the Masking Fixture Module, eliminates the need for manual masking techniques. Additionally, the company recently released a connector that simplifies the integration of nTopology with PLM systems, providing enterprise customers with a clear roadmap to enhance their product development software stack with powerful generative design capabilities.
The new capital will be ideal for expanding the range of applications nTopology serves during the product development process, strengthening its global footprint and growing its team. Tiger Global partner John Curtius said nTopology has become the “new leader” in engineering software as its customers use the software to design the most critical parts of their products. The brand has served hundreds of customers looking to optimize its generative design capabilities to take advantage of new hardware and enhance performance-critical parts.
