For the real estate industry,3D printingIt is no longer an unfamiliar term. Only in the past 2020,3D printingIt has been used to create large-scale housing structures, from three-story buildings to giant turbine towers. And in residential housing, Texas-based construction company ICON has listed its first-ever building based on the U.S. housing market.3D printingTech homes, starting at around $450,000.

ICON’s construction capabilities revolve around its proprietary Vulcan 3D printingMachine-driven, this printer is specifically designed to produce single-story buildings quickly and economically with maximum design freedom. With an adjustable width and print capacity of 2,000 square feet, the system is compatible with many different slab sizes, giving users the flexibility to construct habitable structures in a variety of layouts.
Since the Vulcan can also be transported and deployed without assembly, ICON is able to use it worldwide3D printinglow cost housing. Back in 2018, New Story partnered with nonprofit partners to manufacture a HK$32,000 350-square-foot house in Texas, as an early proof-of-concept for investors.
Since then, ICON has created a group of buildings (including homes for the homeless in Latin America) and “the world’s first3D printingcommunity” to build the capabilities of its platform. The construction firm has also built buildings up and out, developed a huge “vehicle leather structure” for the U.S. Marine Corps, and was even contracted by NASA production on the moon3D printingsystem.
To date, the company’s additively manufactured structures have largely been built as proof-of-concepts, proving the capabilities of its technology. However, in its latest project, ICON is now taking steps3D printingA first step in commercial construction, which may reflect a deviation from its broader growth strategy.
3Strands, ICON’s co-developer, expressed a positive attitude towards the project, with co-founder and CEO Gary O’Dell stating, “Compared to traditional buildings, ICON is in a variety of cost centers. Better homes are offered, and with higher value, including materials, time-to-market, and labor.3D printingThe house represents the future of residential construction for the mass market and illustrates the possibilities of using this technology. “
