Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) department has used3D printingThe machine manufacturer Stratasys’ PolyJet additive manufacturing technology is used to make a prototype of its “Jacquard” wearable electronic sensor.
3D printingThe tags can be affixed to everyday clothes, giving them motion-sensing functions, so that the wearer can control the phone through specific gestures. By adopting Stratasys’ J8 system, the ATAP team has now been able to quickly build prototypes of equipment and deploy them in interactive “gaming sneakers” and “smart backpacks”.
Bryan Allen, ATAP’s technical project manager and laboratory leader, said: “The development of the future is much faster than we thought. Through Google ATAP, we are building the ability to predict what may happen in the future.”
“Our designs are destined to disappear. They should be perfectly integrated into our aesthetic environment.”
Google’s innovative fashion
In the past five years, Google has been steadily commercializing its Jacquard platform. Its current product range includes products such as Levi jackets and Adidas insoles with integrated sensors. These wearable devices contain a tiny embedded tag that provides users with interactive control of various digital devices without actually holding them.
When wearing a Jacquard-enabled device, users only need to swipe or tap to perform operations such as pausing music, taking photos, or answering calls. The sensor itself is small and smart, which means that Google can integrate it into almost any structure, but the merging process can be complicated and often requires multiple technologies to assemble.
For Allen, this is the reason why Google chose Stratasys technology, which can simplify the process and obtain the benefits of specific applications. “Our team is looking for a solution,” Allen explained. “We are always looking for and exploring new technologies, but ultimately the most important thing is application-driven innovation.”
