Markforged, a start-up company headquartered in Boston, USA, has grown rapidly and received an investment of up to $82 million in March 2019.
February 19, 2020, the current3D printingThe machine manufacturer is receiving some additional funding, but the amount will not be disclosed this time because it comes from the highly secretive In-Q-Tel, Inc., (the venture capital arm of the CIA).
Markforged announced that it has signed a strategic investment agreement with In-Q-Tel, an investment company established by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in 1999, mainly involved in government intelligence and security (sometimes controversial) projects. In-Q-Tel usually does not disclose the amount of investment it has made in startups, nor does it disclose the specific role it plays in the companies it invests in.
However, research shows that In-Q-Tel’s average investment capital is between 500,000 and 3 million U.S. dollars in exchange for the company’s equity and acting as an advisor on the startup company’s board of directors.
Although Markforged’s technology has been widely used in various industrial fields, its low-cost metal3D printingAnd fiber reinforced systems have achieved great success in the military and weapons fields. According to the company, the U.S. military is using hundreds of Markforged machines, including “the first metal system to provide support for combat operations, and it has now expanded its support operations to three continents.”
Given the size of the U.S. military, it has funds to explore various3D printingapplication. In particular, the Third Marine Expeditionary Force is using Metal X 3D printingAircraft as part of its repair services in the Asia-Pacific region. Then, Markforged, who has already cooperated with the US military, will naturally accept In-Q-Tel’s investment.
In-Q-Tel’s interest in Markforged also seems natural, because the investment company has already provided funding for other startups in the field, including Voxel8, Fuel3D and Arevo. In particular, Arevo has developed continuous carbon fiber3D printingTechnology, although its technology is different from Markforged’s technology. So far, Markforged has only released continuous fiber reinforcement3D printingThe desktop size system of Arevo, while Arevo focuses on machines that can print the entire bicycle frame. In addition, Arevo uses a laser-mounted robotic arm to deposit pre-impregnated fiber-reinforced materials, while the Markforged process is more similar to traditional benchtop FDM/FFF 3D printing.
Recently, Markforged just released the pure copper material for Metal X and the use of Metal X for Guhring UK3D printingCustom cutting tools. In early February, Markforged became the first and only additive manufacturing company to obtain ISO/IEC 27001 safety certification so far. International standards mark the company’s ability to ensure privacy, confidentiality, integrity, and availability throughout its product line.
