Recognizing the growing demand for air-conditioned assembly workplaces in the region, entrepreneurs in Rotterdam’s Manufacturers Quarter set out to create a comfortable workspace that is both flexible and sustainable. The Port of Rotterdam Authority is currently looking to redevelop the outdated port area with the aim of creating an attractive business environment for the next generation of maritime manufacturers, which prompted the R-IGLO project.
R-IGLO is a pavilion that can be built in larger spaces, consisting of increasingly larger modular elements that can be easily assembled, disassembled, moved and stored when not in use.
Royal3D uses its industrial CFAM 3D printingmachine to produce the modular elements of R-IGLO, which consists of large3D printingMachine supplier CEAD tailor-made for Royal 3D. With an assembly volume of 4 x 2 x 1.5 meters and a print capacity of 15kg per hour, the machine can produce parts on an industrial scale.
The base material for R-IGLO is local plastic PET waste from the Rotterdam port industry to ensure its structure is in line with circular economy concepts. During the CFAM printing process, glass fibers are continuously added to the PET printed material to produce stronger, stiffer and more durable gazebo components. The material also provides decent acoustics and allows enough daylight into the structure.
If the R-IGLO pilot project proves successful, the Port Authority will seek to make it available to prospective tenants and manufacturers who want a sheltered and comfortable workspace that can be easily assembled, disassembled and moved when needed.
