3D printing as a
architecture
Technology is accelerating, and the concept of 3D printed houses, schools, apartment buildings, and even the Martian habitat was unveiled last year. Now another type of structure is added to this list: military camps.
ICON, a construction technology start-up company based in Austin, Texas, announced the project in collaboration with the Texas Military Department this month. The barracks will occupy 3,800 square feet and will be the largest 3D printed structure in North America. And the world’s largest3D printingThe building is a 6,900 square foot municipal office building in Dubai.
The barracks are located in Camp Swift, Bastrop, Texas
Training
The center is replacing temporary facilities that have been used for longer than expected life. 72 soldiers will stay in the building, sleeping on bunk beds, while training for missions and preparing for deployment.
Colonel Zebadia Miller, Director of Facilities at the Texas Military Department, said: “The printed barracks not only provide a safe and comfortable training place for our soldiers, but because they are printed with concrete, we expect them to be usable. Decades.”
The energy-saving barracks were built using ICON’s Vulcan 3D printers. The initial iteration was 11.5 feet high and 33 feet wide, and consisted of shafts set on rails. The printer’s “ink” is a proprietary concrete mixture that is stacked from the beginning. The building was designed by Austin-based Logan Architecture, who previously worked with ICON to develop East 17th Residences, the four partially 3D printed houses that were listed in Austin earlier this year.
This fall, the soldiers will move into the barracks.
As announced this week in the B round
Financing
With US$207 million raised in China, ICON is ready to launch more projects in the coming months and years. In May of this year, the company launched a new Vulcan printer-1.5 times larger and 2 times faster than the previous version-and the House Zero series of houses optimized and designed specifically for 3D printing.
TechCrunch reported last week that since its launch in 2018, ICON’s
income
Annual growth rate of 400%. The startup has tripled its team in the past year to reach the benchmark of more than 100 employees, and plans to double the size again next year.
In the final analysis, many people and organizations have seen the benefits of 3D printing as a construction tool, and with the development of technology, houses and military camps are just the beginning.
ICON co-founder Evan Loomis said: “ICON continues our mission
housing
, Disaster relief housing, market-priced housing, and now provide dignified and resilient housing for those serving our country. “We are promoting this technology in Texas, the United States and the world. This is the beginning of a true paradigm shift in residential architecture. “
