If successful, the Plymouth, Indiana-based company will receive up to $1 million in additional funding to further develop and commercialize the technology.
For this project, SIMBA partnered with Steel Steelular, a California start-up company known for transforming underutilized shipping containers into custom buildings. The two companies will seek to build an independent, mobile 3D manufacturing plant housed in a dedicated container. SIMBA said that each 20 or 40-foot disposable container will be equipped with all the components and resources required for safe metal and fiber additive manufacturing (AM), final processing, finished product inspection, and communication. In addition, the temperature of the mobile 3D manufacturing unit can be controlled to make it comfortable and protect military personnel and equipment. Since these containers are designed to transport their contents to almost any place, they are very suitable for AFRSO’s high-tech, ready-to-mantle needs.

According to China3D printingThe network understands that the solution includes blockchain to protect the dialogue and information critical to the manufacture of specific parts, and will support the Air Force and Department of Defense (DoD) strategies to digitize engineering practices. The solution is expected to improve AFRSO’s ability to produce tools, fixtures, support equipment and aircraft parts in forward operating locations and bases around the world.
