To this end, a team from the Pennsylvania State Research Laboratory will work with a printer based on the 3D Systems DMP Factory 500. DMPFactory 500 is what the company calls a large ” 3D printing“Solution”, or a huge set of solutions. The printing module intended to be installed in the factory.
The printer was chosen because of its large build volume (500 x 500 x 500 mm) and the ability to manufacture parts in the entire build area without stitching them together. It is also designed for continuous printing, can depowder parts and recover excess parts for reuse, and has a vacuum chamber to ensure that differences in oxygen content will not affect batches.
But the team will not use DMP Factory 500 directly. The 3D Systems team is upgrading the parts developed for its 9-laser 1m x 1m x 600mm build volume printer, including coaxial process monitoring and building indoor cameras to provide process views. This new printer was installed at Pennsylvania State University in December, and the team will begin work soon. Their tasks will also include research on process modeling, defect detection, broader topology optimization and cyber-physical security.
3D Systems is optimistic about the cooperation with Raytheon and the Army. This is not unreasonable, because President Biden has chosen Raytheon’s board of directors as his secretary of defense, indicating that the new government may establish a profitable partnership with them.
