China3D printingNet March 31st,3D printingTechnology developer Headmade Materials has entered into3D printingService Bureau Element22 cooperated to develop a novel3D printingBicycle pedal design.
The footless titanium pedal is called MyTi, which uses Headmade Materials to metal SLS 3D printingPrototype made by the proprietary technology Cold Metal Fusion (CMF). The pedal will be launched this summer under the Titanum co-brand.

MyTi non-clip foot pedal
First, introduce the background knowledge of bicycle pedals. The unique feature of the non-clip foot pedal is that it does not have an extra-long belt, which means that users often have to lock it with cleats on the bottom of the riding shoe. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for highly competitive cyclists to accidentally loosen cleats when pedaling too tightly or pulling up during a jump. MyTi aims to solve this problem because it only allows the cleats to be released by pulling laterally.
MyTi clipless pedals are compatible with road and mountain bikes, and performance is fully considered in the design. They are double-sided with a stack height of only 7.3mm and extremely light weight of only 69g. Ti64 pedal 3D printing, The strength is about twice that of aluminum and 40% lighter than steel.
Rico de Wert, one of Titanum’s co-founders, has tried pedal design for many years, but historically has always encountered technical feasibility or high production costs. By enlisting the help of Element22, de Wert got rid of these obstacles. Earlier this year, the Titanum brand was born.
The Titanum team has used3D printingAfter the first batch of MyTi prototypes, the design has now been refined and a patent application has been submitted. The pedals have even been field tested by many famous bicycle experts, such as Ralf Holleis of Huhncyles and Tom Sturdy of Sturdy Cycles.

What makes CMF 3D printingDifferent?
In addition to providing the geometric freedom required to manufacture abstract MyTi structures, CMF 3D printingThe process can also be mass-produced, which will enable the Titanum team to mass-produce thousands of pedals.
Most metal SLS systems may struggle with thermal stress, abundant support structures and low productivity, while Headmade Material’s CMF is well designed. The method draws on the idea of SLS and binder spraying, and involves mixing metal raw material powder with functional binders.
Since only the adhesive is melted, not the actual metal, the system can use less energy and increase its scanning speed. In this way, the printing speed has been greatly improved, and does not require a heat sink structure. After the parts are printed, they are bound and sintered to obtain a completely dense titanium pedal.

In the second half of last year, sportswear giant Adidas revealed its so-called ultimate3D printingRunning shoes Futurecraft “STRUNG”. STRUNG sneakers adopt3D printingThe latest Futurecraft insole produced by the machine manufacturer Carbon is based on user-specific anatomical data and made using the industry’s first textile printing process.
Elsewhere, Carbon has also partnered with sporting goods manufacturer CCM Hockey to3D printingThe world’s first hockey helmet lining certified by the NHL. Super Tacks X with NEST (Next Generation Evolution Sensing Technology), produced by Carbon’s proprietary Digital Light Synthesis (DLS) resin process, has a digitally printed lattice structure on its lining.
In addition to applications in heavy industries such as automobiles and aerospace,3D printingIt is also gradually emerging in the field of sporting goods.
